Surah At-Talaq Facts

In the Quran, Surah Talaq is Chapter 65, in the 28th Juz. There are 12 verses in Talaq surah, and the first seven verses are about divorce (separation of spouses) and its rules. Also, the At-Talaq surah tells us about the timeframe for the iddah (the period for women to spend in their husband’s houses before marrying another man) in the section on divorce.

There are two classes of people in Talaq surah, and the first is those who do not follow Allah’s commands (infidels and polytheists) and deserve harsh punishment.

A second class of people are those who follow the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and are eligible for special guidance and blessing from Allah.

What was the Purpose of Revealing Surah At-Talaq?

There is no specific reason for the revelation of Surah Talaq, so we will mention what was said.

  1. During the divorce of the Prophet Muhammad’s wife (Hafsa), Surat At-Talaq verse one was revealed. In the first aya of the Talaq surah, Allah instructs his Prophet to return his wife since she is fasting, praying, and one of his wives and women is in paradise.
  2. Furthermore, Allah revealed surah At-talaq to Abdullah bin Umar when he divorced his wife while she was menstruating. Muhammad, peace be upon him, instructed Abdullah to return his wife to him and keep her until she had her menses and wait until she got her next period when she became clean again. Accordingly, if he wishes to save her, he can do that, and if he wishes to divorce her, he can do so before having sexual intercourse with her, which is what Iddah Allah has established for divorced women.
