Surah An-Nasr

The 110th Surah in the Qur’an is called Nasr. It goes by the names “Help,” “Devine Support,” and “The Last Word” in English. Surah Nasr is a Madani Surah in Quran and has 5 ayaat.

Early in the Makkan era, this Surah was revealed. The Makki Surah serves as a gentle reminder that everything is under the sovereignty of Allah and that humans should not harbour delusions regarding angels. It also refers to the Mi’raj of the Prophet Muhammad. The 110th surah of the Qur’an is called Nasr. It speaks about God’s assistance and support. It teaches us that even in trying circumstances, the Almighty can give us all the help we require.

The Prophet of Allah (SAW) used to recite the following when bowing and prostrating:

“Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; O Allah forgive me,” observing the directive provided by the Qur’an

“Then exalt (Him) with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him” (110:3) (Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 889)

Helps in Defeating Enemies

A tradition from Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) says

By recreating Sura Nasr in optional or obligatory prayer, Allah (Glory be to Him) makes those who recite it triumphant over their enemies. They will come with a letter that they will read at the Judgment. It is true that Allah has exempted him from the heat and fire of Hell by means of that letter. (Majma’-al-Bayan)

Virtues of Surah Nasr

It was narrated by Aishah (R.A),

When the “Surat-An-Nasr”,

“When comes the Help of Allah and the conquest” (110:1)

had been revealed to the Prophet (SAW), he did not give any more prayers except he said therein,

“I testify the Uniqueness of our Lord, and all the praises are for Him, O Allah forgive me!” (Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 491)

Ubaidullah b. Abdullah b. Utba (R.A) reported

Do you know—or, in the words of Harun (another narrator): Are you aware of—the last Sura that was revealed in the entirety of the Qur’an, Ibn Abbas ( ) asked me? I affirmed:

“When came the help from Allah and the victory (110)

He then remarked,

“You have told the truth.” And in Abu Shaiba’s narrator’s words: “Do you know the Sura?” And he omitted the phrase “the last one” (Sahih Muslim 3024 a)

Narrated Anas bin Malik (R.A)

“That the Prophet of Allah (SAW) asked a man who was a member of his Companions, “Have you married, O so-and-so?” “No by Allah, O Messenger of Allah!” he said. And I have no one with whom to get married. Do you not know that Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad (112) exists? he asked. Of course, he replied. It is one-third of the Qur’an, he declared. Do you not know Idha Ja Nasrullahi Wal-Fath (110)? he questioned. Of course, he replied. It is one-fourth of the Qur’an, he declared. Do you not know Qul Ya Ayyuhal-Kafirun (109)? he asked. Of course, he replied. It is one-fourth of the Qur’an, he declared. Do you not know Idha Zulzilat Al-Ard, he questioned? (99)” Of course, he replied. It is one-fourth of the Qur’an, he declared. Marry, marry, he commanded.” (Jami at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 42, Hadith 2895)

Narrated Ibn Abbas (R.A)

Umar (R.A) asked the people regarding Allah’s Statement:

“When comes the Help of Allah (to you O Muhammad against your enemies) and the conquest (of Makkah).” (110.1)

“It signifies the coming invasion of towns and palaces (by Muslims),” they retorted. What do you think about that, O Ibn ‘Abbas? asked ‘Umar. I retorted, “(This Surat) symbolizes the end of Muhammad’s life. He was notified of his impending demise through it. (Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 493)
