Surah Al-Waqiah

The 56th surah (chapter) of the Quran is titled Al-Waqi’a, which means “The Inevitable” or “The Event.” Muslims believed that it was revealed in Mecca, more particularly, seven years before the Hijrah (622), Muhammad’s journey to Medina. This surah contains 96 verses in total. It primarily explores the afterlife in Islam and the various fates that individuals will experience there.

Revelation History Of Surah Waqiah

According to Quranic scholars, Surah Waqiah is a Makki surah, as it was revealed in Makkah during the era of Muhammad’s prophethood. Although not the majority, some experts claim that some of it was disclosed during the Medinan era. Verse 39–40, verses 81–82, and verse 83 are cited as verses from the Medinan period by some of these commentators.

Significance Of Surah Waqiah

The chapter’s main discussion point is the afterlife (akhirah). This chapter continues the discussion of the benefits of Paradise (jannah) from the previous chapter, Ar-Rahman. By mentioning them and drawing comparisons between them and the punishment of hell.

The chapter also makes a distinction between the three categories of individuals who will exist in the afterlife: “the foremost,” “the companions of the right,” and “the companions of the left.” The first two groups will exist in paradise, while the companions of the left will exist in hell.

The word “right” refers to goodness in this context, and the righteous will sit to the right of God’s throne and hold their records of deeds in their right hands.

The term “foremost” designates a particular set of people who will have a better afterlife than righteous companions. And who the foremost is, different Quranic commentators have different opinions. They associate the first in various ways, including the prophets, the saints, the upright, the martyrs, the first to embrace Islam, and others.

Hadith To Show Surah Waqiah Significance

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2137 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud:

“Allah’s Messenger (saws) said, “If anyone recites a letter from Allah’s Book, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.”

Whoever recites Surah al-Waqi’ah every night, will never be afflicted by poverty. And Ibn Masood (RZ) used to order his daughters to read it every night.”  (Shu’ab al-Iman 4/120, number 2269)

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Surah Mulk is a protector; a rescuer; saving from the chastisement of the grave.” (At-Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim.)
