The 9th surah of the Quran, Surah Tawbah, which means repentance, has 129 verses revealed in Medina, and it’s a Madani surah in quran. Due to its very first word, which announces the Prophet’s (S) repudiation towards unbelievers, it is also referred to as Bara’at, which means repudiation. 70,000 angels accompanied the revelations of Surah Tawbah and Surah Ikhlas.

Surah Tawbah has lots of benefits as the intercession of the Prophet (PBUH) in the next world, protection from fire, theft, and wild animals, and getting ALLAH full support in life.

Benefits Of Reciting Surah At-Tawbah

Quranic verses and surahs benefit the soul just as vitamins and minerals benefit the body. The following are some of the rewards and blessings of surah Tawbah:

Intercession of the Prophet (PBUH) in the next world

If someone recites Surahs Anfal and Tawbah on Qiyamah, I will intercede for him and witness that he is not a hypocrite. As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) says,

If he recites Surahs Anfal and Tawbah on Qiyamah, I will intercede for him and witness that he is not a hypocrite. Furthermore, he will be rewarded for ten good deeds. Mustadrak al-Wasail, vol. 4, p. 340.

Among the True followers of the Prophet (PBUH)

Who read surah Anfal and Bara’at Allah will bless with heavenly bounties. According to Abi Abdullah (AS),

When people are finished accounting for their deeds on the Day of Reckoning, those who read

Anfal and Bara’at will be blessed with heavenly bounties.  Translation of Al-Burhan Tafsir, vol. 6, p. 2.

Fire and Theft Protection

Surah Tawbah provides home safety.

In the words of the Noble Prophet (PBUH), whoever writes the surah Tawbah and carries it with him will be safe from theft, and his home will not be burned by fire.  Ibid, p. 116.

Then say, “Allah is sufficient for me even if they turn their backs [on you]. There is no god but Him. In Him, I have put my trust and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.’ The Quran, 9:129 (Qarai).

Importance of Surah At-Tawbah

There is an excellent virtue in Surah Tawbah. The concept is related to forgiveness and blessings from Allah. We don’t recite Bismillah at the beginning, giving it its individuality.

It conveys the message of jihad. It cancels the peace treaty with enemies of Islam. It highlights the importance of Taubah.

The passage reminds us how Allah’s love is greater than the love of seventy mothers. Allah Almighty always opens the door of mercy to us.

We perform Taubah not only to remove our sins but also to please Allah Almighty. There is no hopelessness in his mercy.

In the Arab world, Islam is a peaceful religion. Muslims made different peace treaties.

During the revelation of Surah Taubah, ALLAH instructed the Prophet (PBUH) to be prepared for jihad against Mushrikeen.

Here are some Quranic verses that demonstrate the importance of repentance:

But those committed evil deeds and then repented and believed, verily, your Lord after (all) that is indeed oft-forgiving, most merciful.  (Surah l-Araf: verse 153)

ALLAH accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they whom ALLAH will forgive, and ALLAH is ever All-knower, All-wise. ( Surh n-Nise, Verse 17)

Narrated Abu Hurairah that

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“This Ayah was revealed about the people of Quba: In it are men who love to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who make themselves pure (9:108).” He said: “They used water to perform Istinja so this Ayah was revealed about them.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3100
